ABOUT Eli
Eli was only 6 years old when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. He was showing signs of diabetes and was taken to the emergency department on March 13, 2017. He was then diagnosed with type 1 and transferred to Kosair Children’s hospital in Louisville, KY. The family received education regarding diet, lifestyle changes, and insulin administration. Eli began injecting himself with insulin and checking his glucose multiple times per day. After a few months, he was started on an insulin pump with a continuous glucose monitor. While this changed the way he checked his glucose and administered insulin, he still has to be very involved in his care. Eli, along with his family, has been fundraising for JDRF for the past five years. We have also participated in the JDRF walks at Churchill downs annually. Camp Hendon has also been important in Eli’s life. One week per year, kids with diabetes attend this camp. Eli loves it! He has made many friends because of this camp who have to live the same lifestyle. Fast forward 7 years. Eli is now very involved with school, being a member of the beta club and academic team. He is also in his second year of track and field. He knows that diabetes can be managed and will not hold him back from doing anything he wants to do.
